Training opportunities for American Indians and those who work with Tribal entities, to attend introductory Metadata, GIS, GPS, new Technologies and Cartographic Design training courses at the U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service National Conservation Training Center, Shepherdstown, West Virginia
In partnership with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), funding opportunities are provided for American Indians and for those who work for a Tribal entity, to attend the following courses at the FWS National Conservation Training Center (NCTC), in support of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure:
TEC7112 - GIS Introduction for Conservation Professionals
Offered November 4-6, 2008, May 19-21, 2009 & July 14-16, 2009.
TEC 7118 - GIS Cartographic Design
Offered Augusg 25-27, 2009.
TEC7132 - GPS Introduction for Natural Resource Field Personnel
Offered Mar 2-5, 2009, August 3-6, 2009.
Funding covers tuition and per diem (food and lodging) at the FWS NCTC in Shepherdstown, WVA Air Fare and rental car must be provided by the participant. Failure to cancel within 2 weeks of the course will prohibit you from enrolling in classes with FWS for one year.

Tribal students can attend with tuition and NCTC room/meal fees covered by a grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) through the Federal Geographic Data Committee (www.fgdc.gov/training/tribal-training). Accepted tribal applicants need only to pay for travel to Shepherdstown and personal incidentals. Interested tribal members should e-mail their desire to attend either these courses, to Bonnie Gallahan (BGallahan [at] usgs.gov) of USGS/FGDC and request a voucher number:

BIA NGRC and ESRI GIS TRAINING

The National Geospatial Resource Center (NGRC) provides GIS training to BIA offices and employees of federally recognized Tribes. There is no tuition cost for this training. Expenses for transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals are the responsibility of the participant. Training courses are available at the National Indian Programs Training Center (NIPTC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico and various field locations. Training dates and availability are subject to change at the discretion of NGRC.
Complete the registration form (the last page of the training schedule) digitally by filling it in and printing it; then fax the printed form to the NIPTC registrars

Instructor-Led and Virtual Campus Training News
ESRI Web-based, standard subscription, Virtual Campus GIS courses and workshops are now available, at no cost, through the current Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) between ESRI and the Department of the Interior (DOI). Fill out the application forms and send to the NGRC for approval. Go to ESRI for more infomation on ESRI training.

West Coast Outdoor Leadership Training
Each session of West Coast Outdoor Leadership Training includes:
7 days (50 hours) of advanced wilderness first aid:
This Red Cross certified course includes: situation organization, emergency action principles, initial assessment, emergency medical situations, level of consciousness, head and spine injuries, respiratory management, circulatory management, life threatening bleeding, shock, secondary assessment, force related injuries, heat and cold related injuries, poisons, medical conditions, pressure related injuries, water related injuries, body systems, airway emergencies, cardiovascular emergencies, musculoskeletal injuries, soft tissue injuries, and evacuation planning.
6 days of sea kayak courses:
Paddle Canada Flatwater, Sea Kayaking Level I and Level II courses teach the skills and knowledge for proficient kayaking in calm and moderate seas in sheltered and moderately exposed coastline.
Learn rescue skills such as wet exits, Eskimo rolls, t-rescues, tows and much more; paddling skills like high and low braces, draw strokes, forward and reverse sweep strokes; and gain knowledge of navigation, weather conditions, seamanship and more.
6 days of lifesaving courses :
Earn Lifesaving Society certified Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certifications while learning and practicing your swimming and rescue skills in the waters of Hesquiaht Harbour. Gain confidence and refine your abilities in real life water activities like surfing.
An overnight hike/paddle
Opportunity to go on a 24-hour solo
An 8 hour BOAT course and exam:
This course is accredited by the Canadian Coast Guard. Successful completion of the BOAT course and exam earns you your Pleasure Craft Operator Card – now required by law for the operation of small craft.
An 8 hour Maritime Radio Course and exam for the Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) : All persons operating a marine radio in Canadian waters are required by law to have this certification.

Learning about the Hesquiaht people and Hesquiaht traditional territories
Hear Hesquiaht stories, and histories, and take part in learning activities like forest walks to identify culturally modified trees and trips to gather seafood and edible plants.
